Moving far?

Moving across the country is almost as demanding as moving comes. The only moves more demanding are the international move and the Hawaiian move. A cross-country move is hard, because it requires a lot of time, planning and money. It’s not something that can be winged without severe consequences, whether it’s a broken chair, running out of gas in Kansas, or two thousand dollars down the drain.

In this article, we break down how to move across country, mile-by-mile. Read on to learn, then check out some Los Angeles movers, or New York movers, or movers from wherever you’re leaving in between.

How to Move Across Country

Okay, to be quite frank, moving across the country isn’t all that different from moving anywhere else. Follow our moving checklist, and you’ll get it done. However, there are some unique things to consider. In that respect, here are our tips for moving across country:

  1. Plan a Roadtrip – Our first tip is our most fun tip. Plan a roadtrip. It’s a great way to see all the stuff our country has to offer, which you normally would not see.
  2. Think About Pods, Boxes and Trains – Hiring a cross-country moving company can be really expensive. If you’re willing to part with some big things, like your bed and couch, you might be able to ship stuff in boxes, use a moving pod, or even take advantage of Amtrak’s very cheap per-pound transportation prices.
  3. Think Warm – Winter is a really bad time to drive 2,000+. Snow and ice are very hazardous for you and your stuff. If you must do it in the winter, then get moving insurance.
  4. Plan in Advance – If there’s one type of move you can’t wake up and decide to do, it’s a cross country move. Give yourself at least two months to get everything in order.
  5. Plan a Route – Make your cross-country move more efficient by avoiding driving bottlenecks, like mountain ranges, the Hoover Dam, and L.A.
