Auto transport
Shipping a vehicle instead of driving it, on its own or alongside a long-distance household move.
- Compare moving professionals
- Free to request quotes
- No obligation to hire
Open or enclosed?
Open carriers are the common choice: the same multi-car trailers dealerships use, and the cheaper of the two. Enclosed carriers protect the vehicle from weather and road debris and are worth it for classic, luxury or low-clearance cars.
What changes the price
- Distance, and whether both ends sit on a major route
- Vehicle size and weight, a pickup costs more than a compact
- Open versus enclosed transport
- Door-to-door versus terminal-to-terminal collection
- Whether the vehicle runs and can be driven onto the trailer
- Season: snowbird routes spike at predictable times of year
Before pickup
- Wash the car and photograph every panel so existing damage is documented
- Empty it, carriers are not licensed to haul household goods inside vehicles
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel
- Check the carrier's insurance certificate and read the bill of lading before signing
