What Are My Cable And Satellite TV Options?
|
|
|
|
Television may be one of the first utilities on your mind during a move, up there with CONNECTING YOUR ELECTRICITY. Most people,
however, get stuck on choosing the type of service and the service provider. There are so many deals out there, all of which seem
like a great deal, but it is hard to filter out all the marketing ploys and see through the flashing TV commercials to find out what
exactly you want. The first and most important question you should ask yourself is: cable or satellite?
There is bad information out there about both types of service, so it is important to know the differences and similarities between
both of them. Cable and satellite are both good services; your choice depends on your preferences and what is the best for your new home.
Both services come with baggage. Satellite has many different requirements, like having to mount the satellite dish near your home and
having an open enough space for the signal to transmit. Cable requires a connection to the outside as well, though in this case it will
go to the cable lines outside. Cable and satellite both usually require a box to connect your television to inside the house, and that
you rent this equipment rather than buy it outright. Satellite does require more equipment: it has the cable/DVR box as well as the
external dish which usually has to be positioned just right to get the signal. Cable has one box but usually DVR functions are an
additional charge.
One factor on everyone’s mind the difference in picture quality between cable and satellite. Many people assume that satellite picture
quality is worse because of the remote signal required to receive it. It is true that the weather and placement can have a large effect
on satellite reception. A few clouds are not going to make you lose your signal, but a fierce storm might. On the other hand, cable is
mostly analog channels. So while you will probably never lose the transmission, you are not getting the same picture quality as
satellite. Satellite has all digital pictures all the time.
The best thing you can do is to GET QUOTES on different TV packages, and then decide which package will fit your needs. You may want an
all-inclusive package, or maybe satellite will be able to give you something cable can’t, or vice versa. So get all the information you
can about the two different types of service before you decide on one. If you live in a temperate climate without frequent storms, you
may benefit from the features of satellite, but if you don’t have a place to set up a dish or if you are worried about reception, then
cable may work out better for you.
In any case just remember that you are going to be signing a contract for this service, so make sure it is what you want at the price you are comfortable paying. The service is for you, to make your home life even more fulfilling and relaxing. So make sure you are fully informed and happy with your service.
