If you are planning to take your car with you when you move, the least expensive option for transporting it is to drive it yourself. Some of you may have more than one car to deal with, however, or wish to save your car the wear and tear of driving across the country. The best option for moving a car without putting thousands of miles on it is to hire a professional Auto Mover.

How to Hire the Right Auto Mover

The first thing you’ll want is an estimate of cost for moving your vehicle. Auto Movers determine cost based on distance, make and model of the car, weight and size of the car, and the car’s operating condition. Other factors in the cost may include additional services provided by the Auto Mover, and the type of insurance you choose. Be advised that larger vehicles such as SUV’s will cost more than smaller sedans. If you’re driving one car and transporting the other, you might want to do a cost analysis between the gas prices and the cost of the professional transport to determine which car you should drive and which car you should haul.

Be sure to get quotes and schedule your Auto Mover at least four weeks before you move. To make sure that you are getting a reputable professional, it is advised to contact the Better Business Bureau to find out if the mover you’ve chosen has a good record. Once your Auto Mover is booked, be certain to read the fine print of your contract, and to get the proper insurance for your vehicle.

Preparing your Car for the Move

  1. Clean your car thoroughly, inside and out. This will help you to see and document any damage that is already there so you can assess your car after the move for any damage that occurred during transport.

  2. Remove any loose items from inside the car. Items that shift or go flying during transport may cause damage.

  3. Your car should have no more than a quarter tank of gas in it. Any more than that will be extra weight that you will be charged for.

  4. Get a tune-up. Make sure your car is in good shape before you move. If your car is leaking any fluids, be sure to let the transporter know.

  5. If your car has an alarm, disable it.

  6. If your car is a convertible, make sure the top is properly secured. If you’re not sure how to do this, ask the transporter.

Ways to Save Money

  • Sell it. The most obvious way to save money is to get rid of your car. Before you hire an expensive transporter, be sure to weigh in the factors of worth. Will your car need to pass safety inspections or emissions tests in your new state? Will your insurance premium jump? Do your research before you spare the expense.

  • Drive it. You might put a lot of miles on your car, but you may be the kind of person that doesn’t mind that sort of thing. If so, just make sure to get a tune-up before you go and after you arrive, if you’ve driven more than 5000 miles.

  • Go part of the way. Some Auto Movers have a terminal-to-terminal option that allows you to drive it to the dock where cars are loaded and then pick it up from the terminal in your new city.
