Chicago runs along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan and is organized into 77 community areas, from the Loop and River North to Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Hyde Park and Pilsen. Lake Shore Drive traces the lakefront, I-90 and I-94 combine as the Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways through the city, and I-290 (the Eisenhower) heads west. O'Hare International and Midway International are the city's two airports.

Much of the North and Northwest sides is classic Chicago three-flat and courtyard-building territory, where walk-up stairs and back porches shape how long a load takes. Downtown and River North are high-rise, which usually means reserving a freight lift and a loading dock through building management. Bungalow belt neighborhoods and suburbs such as Oak Park, Evanston and Naperville are more often single-family with driveway access.

Winter matters. Lake-effect conditions, snow and ice are normal from December into March, and moving companies across the region tend to be busiest at month end and through the summer. Local moves frequently run between the city and the surrounding Cook, DuPage and Lake county suburbs, while long-distance moves often head toward the Sun Belt.
