Telling Your Roommate You're Moving Out

It’s not going to be fun. There’s nothing more insulting than hearing somebody doesn’t want to live with you anymore. However, you’re going to need to do it. You’re going to need to tell your roommate you’re moving out.

There are good ways to do this, and bad ways. Here are some good ways to break the news:

  • Over dinner – Go out, enjoy the night, and midway

through break it to them as easy as can be. The goodwill of dinner should make it easier to swallow.

  • Via letter – A well-thought-out letter is a great way to communicate about awkward issues. Don’t try texting, though. It has a different, more informal feel.
  • Face-to-face – Hey, sometimes you just have to break the news, and being up front about it is at least honest. Think about what you will say first so you don’t end up saying something you’ll regret. Also, pick a good time, like a Saturday afternoon — don’t break the news during a stressful time for your roomy.
